This search was done for Mary Hardy Cochran, now of Williston SC, whose parents were born in upstate SC- Oconee and Anderson counties. Apparently her original Hardy family came from near Lunenburg VA between 1770 and 1777 to Laurens District of Old Ninety Six.
Around 1784, another branch of the Hardy family (descended from John and Olive Hardy of England), which I cant connect to Lt. Christopher Hardy, came from Lunenburg VA, as well. Christopher may or may not have been a very distant cousin.
These other Hardys in Old 96th District, in which Edegfield, Laurens and Newberry lay, were Thomas Hardy who fought under Gen. Washington and his brother John Hardy who fought in the Rev. as well. They are well documented and my daughter is in the DAR under the descendency from John Hardy of Edgefield District on Sweetwater Creek and Big Stevens Creek where they had a large plantation of about 1000 acres which is now in North Augusta, SC. Thomas Hardy and his children settled in the Newberry/Laurens area near Union, SC on the Tiger River. (See my Thomas Hardy family blog.) His brothers John and Richard settled in Edgefield District of the Old Ninety Six District. (See my John Hardy 1740 blog.) Richard Hardy settled up near Saluda (see my Richard Hardy blog) in Edgefield SC. Carol Hardy Bryan of Edgefield SC is his descendant. Richard Hardy and wife Molly Mathews lived in Greenville Co VA right near Mecklenburg Co where John Hardy and Ann had first lived in the early part of her marriage. The area where Greenville is was Brunswick which was divided to include Greenville, Lunenburg, Mecklenburg and other counties. Here is the developement of the county where they lived.
1732 Brunswick gained from Isle of Wight.
1745 Lunenburg taken from Brunswick
1752 Halifax taken from Lunenburg
1754 Bedford from Lunenburg
1764 Charlotte and Mecklenburg taken from Lunenburg
1780 Greenville taken from Brunswick and Suxxex
below BM is Brunswick after they took it from IW (Isle of Wight) and divided Isle of Wight.
The only thing which ties Christopher Hardy to Lunenburgh VA is his wife Jane Wallace Glaze who married up there in 1760 and moved with her husband Joseph Glaze to Laurens Co SC. "Kit" is a male name which appears in the Lt Christopher Hardy family descendants and it is a nickname for Christopher who was the progenitor of the family in SC. He was born around 1740-1750 in VA and was murdered by Bloody Bill Cunningham at Hayes Station in Laurens Co SC in the Revolutionary War on November 19, 1781.
Mary Hardy Cochran'sfather was Henry W. Hardy and her grandfather Robert M. Hardy. Robert M. Hardy appears first in the 1900 census in Red Hollow, Franklin Co., GA with his "brother" John Hardy born GA in the same house with his mother, widow Stacey Redden Hardy born SC. She claims to have had only 2 children- this mean perhaps that 2 are still living or she cant remember anymore? Robert M. is not with her in the 1880 census.
1880 census Franklin, Red Hollow, GA
There is a problem though. Although Robert M. Hardy is listed as John's brother, it is possible that he was either adopted or was a cousin who came to live with the mother Stacey Hardy born 1832? The reason is that Robert does not appear with his parents in the 1880 census even though he was born in 1877. In fact there is no Robert or Robert M. with his brother John Henry Hardy (b 16 April 1860 GA, d 22 Feb 1924 GA, married Lou Evelyn Smith) in the 1880 GA census. Also it states he was born in GA and that both his parents were born in GA. This is odd because Stacy is born in SC. So although it accepted that Robert M. Hardy and his younger brother are the children of Henry H. Hardy, what is the truth? Are they grandchildren? I believe Robert M. to be the unnamed baby of John C. Hardy in Bartow GA. In the list of 10 children for Christopher Hardy Jr. and Emelia Permelia Walker is a John Hardy born ca 1830 who married Gilly Reddon. Since I havent yet found John C. Hardy before the 1870 census when he had just married Emma, I have to use other clues. He has a grandson name John Christopher and a granddaughter named Gillie.
Or was the baby Robert M. sleeping and everybody forgot about him? Was the mother Stacy visiting relatives when the census taker came and the older boys forgot to mention the baby? There is an orphan living with them- she is named Emma Hardy age 16 born SC. She was born in SC and so were her parents, according to the census. Robert M. Hardy's mother was from GA. At least according to the 1900 census. I find no Emma Hardy born in 1864 SC in the 1870 census. I find a Deilila E. Hardy in Horry Co SC. Whoever they were, they preferred the "Hardee" spelling.
Here is the 1880 census from which Robert M. is missing as a child. All the children are quite older -then he would have been- age 3.
1880 census
Robert M. Hardy 1877 is definitely descended from Lt Christopher Hardy, but it is my theory that he is actually not the brother of John Hardy b 1860 with whom he appears in 1900 census, as it states in the census, but perhaps he is the cousin- that John C. Hardy 1833 of Bartow GA is his father and John Hardy 1860 of Franklin Co GA his cousin. I think he is the unnamed 3 year old baby of John (C.) Hardy and Emma in Bartow Co GA in 1880. They have a Kit in this family which is a sure sign they are related. Kit stands for Christopher and the descendants kept on naming children Kit after their fallen hero/ancestor Lt Christopher Hardy of the Rev. war in Laurens Co. SC. I think John C. stands for John Christopher. I think that they took in the orphans of John Hardy and Emma, maybe between 1885 and 1890. In other words John Hardy thought of Robert M. as his brother because they grew up together and Stacey Hardy raised them both up together, sometime after 1885.
In 1880 I find an unnamed Hardy baby boy in Stilsboro, Bartow Co, GA and they have a Kit which is a name used in the family descended from Lt Christopher Hardy, as it is a nickname for Christopher. Could this be Robert M.' father and an uncle to the John Hardy in the 1880 census.
But following him back to 1870, we see no Robert M. Hardy. Still this man John C. Hardy is probably related to this family which uses "Kit." James, Martha, Willie, Mary and Benjamin are all gone by 1880. maybe he is John Christopher Hardy? last born son of Christopher Hardy Jr? john Hardy married 27 Jan 1870 in Bartow Co., GA to Emma.
The children of John C. Hardy b 1833 SC by Gilly Redden his 1st wife are (no proof)-
1. James Walter Hardy 1857 GA died in Rabbittown, Calhoun Co, AL m. 1st Liza (Elizabeth) m. 2nd 1887 to Lizzie Stewart who died in Center, Cherokee Co, AL -known children of John W. Hardy are
John H. Hardy 1877 Bartow Co GA,
Mary G. Hardy 1880 Bartow Co GA,
Gillie Hardy- August 1883 GA (named after her grandmother Gilly Redden),
Willie or William Hardy- March 1884 GA,
children by Lizzie Stewart-
A J Hardy Dec. 1888, AL
Sara Hardy Nov. 1890 AL- probably born in Edwardsville, Cleburne, Alabama
2. Martha Hardy 1858 GA
3. Mary Fletcher Hardy 1860 GA
4. William "Willie" Hardy 1862 GA
5. Benjamin Hardy 1863 GA
by Emma b 1838 GA whom he purportedly married 27 January 1870 in Bartow GA
6. Bonnie M. Hardy 1871 GA
7. Kit "King" Hardy 1873 GA (Kit is nickname for Christopher), died 8 May 1948 in Bibb Co GA, married Mamie J. Cowart 3 Oct 1893
8. George Hardy 1875 GA
9. child Hardy 1877 GA (my theory it is Robert McDaniel Hardy)
perhaps also-
10. Emma Hardy 1884 SC
The State of Georgia usurped Cherokee lands and created the county today known as Bartow and nine others in 1832. Bartow County was originally Cass County, in honor of Lewis Cass, of Michigan, Secretary of War under President Andrew Jackson. Following the outbreak of the Civil War, Cass was renamed "Bartow" in honor of Francis Bartow, who fell at the First Battle of Manassas. By the end of the Civil War, Bartow County bore little evidence of her antebellum prosperity. 1864 brought rampant devastation. That year, Bartow witnessed the full fury of the Union Force's Atlanta Campaign, the first battle in the CSA's Campaign for Nashville, and the launch of the March to the Sea from Kingston. The county seat, Cassville, with her two colleges, four hotels, wooden sidewalks and proud homes, was destroyed.
Also in Bartow (Cass Co) John W. Hardy and wife Harriet Whitfield with a child Christopher, as well as John W. Hardy's brother (most likely, or cousin) Wyley Hardy b 1820 SC. From the births of Wyly´s children, it looks like they came to GA by 1839 which would put them in an 1840 census:
The name Wyley is unusual and appears om this Hardy family-

Dec.18,1856 they had 4 children Wiley Mitchell Hardy B-July.12,1858 , Lucy C. I am told that her parents are buried in Sardis Cemetery in Harris County, GA I had had these children down as the children to Mary Ann Bass , Jame's 2nd wife , James and Mary Ann was married June.25,1865 in Harris County, Ga
