Lt. Christopher Hardy Sr. and wife Jane Wallace Glaze

This family moved from VA to Laurens Co SC.  Christopher Hardy Jr's parents were Lt. Chistopher Hardy Sr and widow Jane Wallace Glaze from Granville Co, NC, widow of Joseph Glaze who died 1776 in Newberry District SC- she had married Glaze in Lunenburg VA about 1760. She was the d/o John and Isabella Rutherford Wallace. Lt It is recorded in a book (tho I believe incorrectly) that Christopher Hardy's first wife was a Sarah Rutherford, daughter of a Col. Robert Rutherford -but which one and how could this be -(According to this, from the book Newberry County, South Carolina: historical and genealogical annals By George Leland Summer )  This is not possible because Col. Robert's Rutherford's daughter Sarah b. 31 Oct. 1776 married Freeman Hardy b. 20 Mar 1771 in Lunenburg, Virginia and was born much too late (she was 5 years old when Lt. Christopher Hardy died) to have married Lt. Hardy born about 1745, died 1781.

Lt. Hardy and Jane Glaze married about 1777 in Laurens Co SC. Lt. Hardy was killed 19 November 1781 at the Battle of Haye's Station in Laurens Co SC by Bloody Bill Cunningham:

In November 1781 the Revolutionary war was still going on in SC even after Cornwallis had surrendered at Yorktown on October 19, 1781. Philpot was transferred to Hayes station SC. While at Hayes station Bloody Bill Cunningham, a Tory leader attacked the encampment on November 19, 1781.

Bloody Bill Cunningham had started out being a patriot in the SC militia in 1775, but after being court-martialed after a trivial offense, Cunningham deserted. In response to Cunningham’s desertion, the SC militia had Cunningham’s father and brother executed. This event caused Cunningham to become a Tory.  Cunningham tracked his family murderers down and killed them.

After the battle of Charleston SC in May 1781, Cunningham killed several patriots who forced the wives and children of Tory Families to be brought to the front lines during the battle of Charleston to be used as human shields. Cunningham is also famous for his exploits in the Battle of the Cloud creek fought in Lexington SC on November 17, 1781 where 20 patriots were killed.

The battle of Hayes Station was fought in Laurens county Sc near the Milton Community on November 19, 1781. 14 patriots were hanged after they surrendered to Cunningham including Captain Hayes of the SC militia. Hayes was killed with a sword when his rope broke that was being used to hang him. One trivial note about the battle, Cunningham’s favorite horse was killed during the battle and was given full military honors of a British military style funeral and buried on the battle site at Hayes Station, one of the few horses to be given such an honor during the war.

Notes for SARAH GLAZE married Rev. John Burns Sr on June 22, 1783 in Laurens DistrictThis story about Sarah GLAZE is from a family history called:

BURNS FAMILY, OLD 96 DISTRICT, SOUTH CAROLINA
Compiled in 1954 by James Calhoun Burns, Sr.

"Sarah Glaze was a very 'out-spoken' Whig, it seems, expecially after the death of her stepfather (Lt. Christopher Hardy). Her younger sister, Susan, was more timid, and always feared for Sarah's life when she talked with the Tories.

On one occasion, a crowd of children were playing near Milton Bridge (Laurens County) when they were approached by "Bloody Bill" Cunningham and his gang. The younger children hid under the bridge, but Sarah was defiant. One Tory was heard to say, as he hitched his horse to the bridge post, 'Let's give that girl a good scare.' His partner spoke up, 'Don't you know who that is? She's Sallie Glaze and the Devil himself couldn't scare her!'

Another time, on a cold winter night during the War, Jane Hardy and her little fatherless children were sitting by a glowing fire in the fireplace of their home waiting for the corn cakes on the Johnny Boards to reach their delicious 'brown-eating' stage. Sarah was standing by a window and noticed a band of Tories approaching. She quickly threw the bread into the fire. When the soldiers came into the house to fill their haversacks with food, they saw the charred Johnny Cakes. One Tory, with up-raised sword, said to Sarah, 'I'll bet you burned up the Johnny Cakes.' She replied, 'I certainly did! We don't cook for Tories here!' "
