Hello Hardy researchers:

Due to limited time I am going to send this to the list so my fellow
Hardy researchers of my line of CHRISTOPHER HARDY JR. can all see this.

His grandfather was Christopher Hardy SR. Lt. in the Revolutionary War
and killed in the MASSACRE of HAYS STATION, Laurens Co., S.C. he
married Jane Wallace Glaze.

I found this a couple weekends ago while doing research for my next book
on Jackson Co., Ga. Volume 7 THESE MEN WORE GREY
"http://www.hartcom.net/~scv935/grey";.

This was in the records of the family of William L. Keith 2160 Plum
Lane, Austell, Georgia 30106, done Jan.1997.

The problem with researcing this family is this: In the 1840 and 1850
Laurens Co. census records, he is NOT Berry BURGESS. He is listed as
BERRY PINSON. further research in Laurens Co. found estate settlement
records of ISAAC PINSON. These records indicated Isaac Pinson had
reared Berry Pinson in his household, but Berry was not named as a
grandchild in property settlement. Who was he REALLY a Burgess or a
Pinson. Does anyone know why he changed his name to Burgess, was he
really a Burgess by birth or a PINSON. Isaac Pinson did have a daughter
who married a BURGESS, but Berry is not one of her children. They are
listed in Isaac's estate settlement rec. their inheritance as
grandchildren and are named.

Berry moves to Franklin Co. around 1851, according to obituary of his
son John Y. Burgess, C.S.A. 52nd Ga. Regt., bur. at Pleasant Hill Bapt.
Ch. in Franklin Co., Ga. After the family moves to Ga. he became BERRY
BURGESS. NANCY BURGESS his wife is listed on the 1863 Franklin Co. SALT
RATIONS LIST during the War Between The STates as "wife of confederate
soldier now in service." Also listed right beside her was Mrs. Martha
Burgess (wife of John Y. Burgess, their daughter-in-law.) I can find no
"official records" of Berry's military records. Not even on Militia
enrollment of Franklin co. However, this is proof that he was in
service, for she was allowed salt rations.

Children of Berry Burgess and Nancy Hardy are as follows:
1. John Y. Burgess--1839--1939: marr. Martha THOMAS, (daug. of Jesse
Thomas and Rhoda Jackson, both bur. at the Thomas/Burgess Fam. Cem.
in Franklin Co. large number of his Descendants around Toccoa,
today.
2. Sophia A. Burgess--1840; unmarried
3. James H. Burgess---1841 : no further knowledge
4. Wiley H. Burgess--1843: C.S.A. served in Co.B, Patricks Co.: 1st
Ga. State Line. went to Texas after the war I am told
5. PAMELIA ELIZABETH BURGESS : born Jan. 20, 1845--Dec. 22, 1935: marr.
HOWELL COBB WOOD (Oct. 15, 1846--July 15, 1915) my Great
Grandparents: Howell was confederate Soldier in the 13th Ga. CAvalry.
they are bur. at Clarks Creek Bapt. Ch. in Franklin Co. Their son
LEE ANDERSON WOOD, 1880--1949 Was my Grandfather, marr. MARTHA ALTA
BROWN (Hart Co. Brown's) 1887--1973: both bur. Clarks Creek.
6. William H. Burgess: 1847 mar. SABRA SMITH HAYNIE (a widow), daug.
of Joseph Henry SMITH.
7. Mary E. "Sis" Burgess: b. 1850. unmarried.

Any help with this problem of Burgess versus Pinson will be greatly
appreciated. Will share my information with any family members.
Thank you.

  1. ISO information about Wiley Hardy (1813-1872) m. Susanah Burton and their daughter Sarah Angeline Hardy who married John W. Wells (all in Laurens County SC). Is there a connection between Wiley Hardy and this line of Hardy's?? Thank you for any information! renitallen@gmail.com

  2. James Cornelius Hardie (he changed surname spelling) died 10 August 1929 and is buried in Sallie Hill Cemetery, Warrenton GA beside his 2nd wife, Lucy Ellen Cody. His 1st wife was Elizabeth "Lizzie" Bates, 1847-1876. Lizzie died in Athens GA. J.C. (as he was called) graduated from the U of GA, moved down to Atlanta, went into real estate. He spent his last years at the Confederate Soldiers Home outside Atlanta. I have photos of him with his fellow soldiers, and a few with his daughter by Lizzie, Vandora Alice Hardie. She was my great-grandmother.
